"American" is, ironically, an Americanism.

The term "American" *should* apply to the entirety of the American continent, be they Canadian, Brazilian, Chilean, Mexican, or anywhere in North or South America.

Germans, for instance, may easily refer to themselves as European without being mistaken for a resident of some other country. Ask around in Japan; they'll gladly accept it if someone calls them Asian (unless they're really that patriotic).

However, no Canadian will call themselves American, because the residents of the United States have decided to call themselves American, simply due to the fact that "four score and seven years ago" (or considerably more than that), their "forefathers" decided to give their country a description in lieu of a name.

Yeah. So I've been trying to cut the word "American" out of my vocabulary for its known purpose. When referring to "America", I say "United States". When referring to "an American", I call them a "resident of the United States". Yes, it's longer than just "American", but really, that's not what they are, country-wise. They are so continent-wise, but that really loops me back around to the start of this rant.

So...yeah.
